Frequently Asked Questions about Charity Tax Relief

1. What is the total amount of donations that qualify for tax relief?
Donations that amount to €250 or more in the full tax year qualify for relief

2. Can I only claim €250?
No!  Please write the full amount you contributed to the church in the year 2009 on your form.

3. I do not pay tax but my husband/wife does?
As you are taxed as a married couple either party can sign the form using either party’s PPS number.

4. I am an old age pensioner and do not pay any tax?
Unfortunately some old age pensioners pay some form of tax on their pension.  We can claim on this amount.

5. Are there any restrictions on who can claim tax relief?
Yes.  Only taxpayers whose total income is subject to PAYE can claim under this scheme.  E.g. if you have any other income e.g. Dividends or rental income you must claim as a self employed taxpayers.  Again we will be happy to provide you with a receipt.

6. I am self employed.  Can I claim tax for the parish?
Yes. You can pursue the tax rebate with a receipt of your parish donations, which we will happily provide.

7. How much money will you get for my €250?
From a person on the standard rate of 20% giving the minimum €250 per year, the parish can claim €62.50.  If the tax rate is 41% the rebate is €173.72.

8. My tax rate is personal and I do not want anyone to know what rate of tax I pay.
The tax rate is requested by the Revenue Commissioner to enable charities to claim back tax at the same rate as he donor.  If details of the tax rate are not provided, a claim made by a charity on a donor’s donation will be claimed at the standard rate, thus reducing the claimable income.  As details are confidential to the parish and the Revenue Commissioners and will not be used for anything other than the tax claim.

9. What is my PPS number and where do I get it?
This number is given to you by the Revenue Commissioners.  You will find it quoted on any form sent to you by them.  It should be on your pay slip.

10. Do you retain my PPS number in the parish?
Revenue advises that in relation to the provision of the Data Protection Act, it is not permissible for parishes to retain PPS numbers without the EXPRESS permission of the donor.  We would appreciate if you would please sign the consent form and return it with your other details
