Dear Father,
I have received from the SOCIETY OF SAINT VINCENT DE PAUL the breakdown for the Archdiocese of Dublin for the annual SVP Church Collection held on 12th /13th Dec 2009.
Even in a time of economic hardship, the collection showed an increase on the previous year.  The 2008 collection amounted to €1,947,502 while the 2009 collection was €2,039,097.
 I thank the people of the parishes for their continued generosity and commend the good work of the Society.
With prayerful good wishes,
+Diarmuid Martin,   Archbishop of Dublin

NOTE ON ROME MEETING
On 15th and 16th Feb Pope Benedict XVI met with the Diocesan bishops of Ireland.  The idea of such a meeting was broached by Pope Benedict when he met with Cardinal Brady and me in December last. On that occasion the Pope expressed his regret, outrage, betrayal and shame on what had been chronicled in the Murphy Report. He also announced that he intended to write a pastoral letter to the Church in Ireland.
The aim of this meeting was to listen to the Irish Bishops and to the reactions they had garnered from survivors and from Catholic faithful to the tragic events of abuse which were chronicled in the Murphy report and to the “failure of the Irish Church authorities for many years to act effectively in dealing with such abuse”.   It was recognised that in addition to the terrible harm done to survivors, this failure had damaged “the Church’s spiritual and moral credibility”.
Pope Benedict challenged the bishops to address the problems of the past with determination and resolve.
Texts which had been given to various bishops from survivors groups and individual survivors were given to Pope Benedict.
Before going to Rome I met with various survivors and I had also read carefully the reactions sent to me by Parish Pastoral Councils and by thousands of individuals.
Pope Benedict is now working on his promised Pastoral Letter.  This Letter will not be a systematic examination of events, but a pastoral reflection of the Pope, whose office in the Church is to confirm and strengthen the local Churches.  The Letter will be one of many steps to be taken in the months and years to come especially within the Irish Church.

COMMUNION MINISTRY in Exceptional Circumstances
It is a blessing and a consolation when a housebound person is enabled to receive Communion at home. Our lay ministers of Holy Communion render our parishioners invaluable assistance in this regard.
It is not in order for those distributing Holy Communion to be asked to put consecrated hosts into a box presented to them (by persons usually unknown to them) at Communion time during Mass.
Parishioners whose housebound relatives in this parish, in exceptional circumstances, might like to receive Holy Communion at home, are invited to approach celebrants, preferably before Mass, for advice on the procedure to be followed.

 HOLY FAMILY PARISH
KILL-O-THE-GRANGE

13th /14th February, 2010

THE PRIMARY REASONS TO FAST ARE:
• In order to grow closer to God;
• In order to humble ourselves, recognising need for repentance and forgiveness; and
• In order that through fasting we might learn to control and master our appetites, especially our appetite for food!
Do not let ONLY your mouth fast, but also the eye and the ear and the feet and the hands and all the members of the body.
• Let the hands fast be being free of avarice;
• Let the feet fast be ceasing to run after sin;
• Let the eyes fast by disciplining them not to glare at what is sinful.
• Let the ear fast by not listening to evil gossip + talk.
• For what good is it if we abstain from meat and fish but devour our brothers and sisters?
Bible alive 18th January 2010

From Archbishop Martin
I would like to thank you for your help and support with last weekend’s special collection for Haiti. I have no doubt that, as in the past, the people of the Archdiocese have been generous in their support.
I know many of you may be aware of people who are already volunteering in Haiti and you may wish to nominate them or their organisation for support from this collection.
Can I also take this opportunity to thank you for your support for the office of Evangelisation in the distribution of the Gospel of Luke? Support for the project from parishes and organisations has been tremendous. Within just 10 days of publication, 100,000 copies have already been requested by parishes, chaplaincies and ministries within the diocese. Another print run of 100,000 has been requested to meet demand.
The office also plans to have a specially designed e-mail communication for Ash Wednesday to support people in reading the Gospel and you will receive information on this shortly.
With prayerful good wishes           +Diarmuid Martin

 HOLY FAMILY PARISH
KILL-O-THE-GRANGE

16th/17th January, 2010

The Baptismal Team would like to convey our thanks to the parents who braved the very inclement weather on Sunday last to bring along their children who were baptised in Holy Family church during 2009 for a special blessing and greeting on the feast of the baptism of Our Lord.  The team were delighted to meet again parents, siblings and in some cases grandparents who went to such trouble to be with us for the 12 Mass.  We look forward to meeting you in our parish during the coming year and perhaps you will bring along the children to meet us at the Doughnut Sunday gathering which takes place on the first Sunday of every month after the 10.30 Mass at the back of the church.  May you be blessed in your children.  Rosaline Dunphy.  11th Jan 2010.

HAITI DISASTER
On Tuesday night an earthquake struck Haiti killing many thousands. In response, Pope Benedict XVI called on "the generosity of all people" to support those worst affected.  He added that "the Catholic Church will not fail to move immediately, through her charitable institutions, to meet the most immediate needs of the population".  Trócaire is the official overseas development agency of the Catholic Church in Ireland and they desperately need your assistance to help the people of Haiti. Communion Ministry in Exceptional Circumstances  It is a blessing and a consolation when an housebound person is enabled to receive Communion at home. Our lay ministers of Holy Communion render our parishioners invaluable assistance in this regard.
It is not in order for those distributing Holy Communion to be asked to put consecrated hosts into a box presented to them (by persons usually unknown to them) at Communion time during Mass.
Parishioners whose housebound relatives in this parish, in extenuating and exceptional circumstances, might like to receive Holy Communion at home, are invited to approach celebrants, preferably before Mass, for advice on the procedure to be followed.
Thank you.  Fr Michael

TAX REBATE SCHEME
Under the tax rebate scheme, the Parish can obtain a refund of the income tax associated with donations from PAYE taxpayers.  This applies to standing order donations, and to the Easter and Christmas Dues, where total donations in the tax year are €250 or more.  This applies to PAYE taxpayers who have qualified to participate in the scheme.  Non PAYE taxpayers can pursue the tax rebate with a receipt of their parish donations, which we’ll happily provide. We would like to thank everyone for their continuing generous support of the Parish.  The additional income raised from this scheme helps in meeting Parish expenses.

ARCHBISHOP Martin17/12/09
I believe Bishop Donal Murray did the right thing, for his Diocese and for the wider Irish Church and I appreciate the personal difficulty and pressure he has been under.
Responsibility must be taken by all who hold a position of authority and collective responsibility. There have been serious difficulties of structure and communication at management level in the Archdiocese of Dublin. The Murphy report indicates how decisions were taken which resulted in further children being abused. Accountability must be assumed for that and radical reform is required in the Archdiocese, not just in the area of child protection. I am satisfied with our current situation in the child protection area – but I am not complacent – and it too requires ongoing commitment.  I will be meeting those in this diocese who are named in the report about the way this Archdiocese is managed and about changes I want and that I consider vital for the future of the Archdiocese of Dublin.

The next Pre-Baptismal Meeting for Parents intending to have their children baptised in January 2010 takes place at 7.35p.m. Mon 4th Jan 2010 in the church meeting room.  Kindly present the child’s birth certificate at this meeting (to be returned).  For information about parish services, please contact only the parish office phone 284 5299 (10a.m. - 1p.m. weekdays)

ARCHBISHOP DIARMUID MARTIN’s Statement 26th Nov 2009 (full text) It is difficult to find words to describe how I feel today.  As Archbishop of a Diocese for which I have pastoral responsibility, of my own native diocese, of the diocese for which I was ordained a priest, of a Diocese which I love and hope to serve to the best of my ability, what can I say when I have to share with you the revolting story of the sexual assault and rape of so many young children and teenagers by priests of the Archdiocese or who ministered in the diocese?  No words of apology will ever be sufficient. Can I take this opportunity to thank Judge Yvonne Murphy and her team for their diligent and professional work in producing this Report, which I expect will provide an invaluable framework for how we can better protect the children of today and the future. The Report of the Commission gives us some insight into the crimes that took place.  But no report can give an indication of the suffering and trauma endured by the children, and indeed the suffering also of their family members.  Many survivors have not yet been able to speak about abuse they experienced. For them the publication of the Report must be truly traumatic. I urge them to turn to some trusted friend, to a counsellor or counselling service of their choice, to the health services, to the Gardai or if they so wish to the Diocesan Child Protection Service.

The report focuses on a representative sample of cases, but the Commission examined many other cases.  The Report highlights devastating failings of the past. These failings call on all of us to   scrupulously apply clear guidelines and norms.   There is no room for   revisionism regarding the norms and procedures in place.  The sexual abuse of a child is and always was a crime in civil law; it is and always was a crime canon law; it is and always was grievously sinful.  One of the most heartbreaking aspects of the Report is that while Church leaders – Bishops and religious superiors - failed, almost every parent who came to the diocese to report abuse clearly understood the awfulness of what has involved.  Almost exclusively   their primary motivation was to try to ensure that what happened to their child, or in some case to themselves, did not happen to other children.  Their motivation was not about money or revenge; it was quite simply about that most basic human sense of right and wrong and that basic Christian motivation of concern for others.   The survivors of abuse who courageously remained determined to have the full truth heard by all deserve our recognition and admiration. How did those with responsibility dramatically misread the risk that a priest who had hurt one of those whom Jesus calls “the little ones” might go on to abuse another child if decisive action was not taken?   Excuses, denials and minimisations were taken from priest abusers who were at the least in denial, at worst devious in multiple ways, and decisions were taken which resulted in more children being abused.  Efforts made to “protect the Church” and to “avoid scandal” have had the ironic result of bringing this horrendous scandal on the Church today. The damage done to children abused by priests can never be undone.  As Archbishop of Dublin and as Diarmuid Martin I offer to each and every survivor, my apology, my sorrow and my shame for what happened to them.   I am aware however that no words of apology will ever be sufficient. The fact that the abusers were priests constituted both and offence to God and affront to the priesthood. The many good priests of the Archdiocese share my sense of shame.  I ask you to support and encourage us in our ministry at what is a difficult time. I know also that many others, especially parents, feel shocked and betrayed at what has been revealed. I hope that all of us - bishops, priests and lay persons - working together can rebuild trust by ensuring that day after day the Church in the Archdiocese of Dublin becomes a safer environment for children. I ask the priests of the diocese and the Parish Pastoral Councils to ensure that the wide reaching measures introduced into our parishes and organizations regarding the safeguarding of children are rigorously observed and constantly verified and updated.  This scandal must be an occasion for all of us to be vigilant so that the abuse of children - wherever it takes place in our society - is addressed and the correct measures are taken promptly. The hurt done to a child through sexual abuse is horrific.  Betrayal of trust is compounded by the theft of self esteem.   The horror can last a lifetime.  Today, it must be unequivocally recalled that the Archdiocese of Dublin failed to recognise the theft of childhood which survivors endured and the diocese failed in its responses to them when they had the courage to come forward, compounding the damage done to their innocence.  For that no words of apology will ever be sufficient. + Diarmuid Martin
